What Brimstock Cottage Means to Us
Brimstock Cottage
We bought Brimstock Cottage in 2015 to be a base for us, our disabled daughter, our son and 4 dogs. We have tried to create a modern and comfortable cottage with all the technology that we have at home but with character and views to die for.
It is gorgeous at any time of year - visit
- in Summer, when you can sit on the patio with the BBQ and a glass in hand, soaking in the views
- in Autumn, when the trees are turning and the sun filters through - the walks are quieter and more reflective
- in Winter after a bracing walk, catching glimpses of the lakes and views that are hidden by leaves in the summer, curl up in front of the wood burning fire which just tops off the warm centrally heated cosy rooms. Or walk the 50 yards down to the Cuckoo Brow Inn and sit in front of their central fire and enjoy a pint of Bluebird!
- then in Spring with the riot of colour as the Azalea and Rhododendrans burst out and the grass grows like crazy! The nights get lighter but the tourists haven't yet arrived so lots of time to potter around Hawkshead, Ambleside and Bowness.
The cottage is always a work in progress, and we try and improve it all the time. and recent projects have included a new kitchen and new bathroom.
Love the Lake District
When we were young we both visited the Lake District regularly - obviously unknown to each other! The area is the mainstay of many of childish memories of parents and brothers and sisters on family breaks and holidays.
One of my memories is being forced to trail up the mountains in the rain when I would have far preferred to have been watching TV! Now those are treasured memories and the walks from the cottage are the amongst the most beautiful in the Lake District.
We searched for a long time for the perfect place for our getaway home.
- We wanted somewhere away from all the bustle of a busy life but close to small and interesting towns with unique shops and pubs.
- We wanted to be able to walk from the cottage without having to get the car out.
- We wanted walks that were beautiful and varied, not too busy but not too isolated.
- We had 3 dogs at the time and found it more and more difficult to find places to stay - we have since added yet another one! We wanted a dog-friendly pub within walking distance.
We had a long list of wants!!
Dog Friendly
When we say dog-friendly we really mean it. We have now have 4 border collies (we recently lost our beautiful golden retriever, Lulu). They absolutely love the cottage, the garden and the walks and the lakes.
We don't charge extra for dogs, and we don't have an artificial limit on how many might stay. We expect you to look after your dogs and use the covers for the sofas and pick up the poop in the garden - just as you would at home. Otherwise enjoy them - ours are as much a part of the family as the rest of us.
But if you don't have dogs then don't worry - our cottage is cleaned thoroughly between guests and other than the photos on the walls you would never know they had been there.
We are happy to share our home with our visitors and many of our guests return again and again.
We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
