Mountain Bike Route Around the Tarns
Difficulty : Medium
Length : 7.4 milesThis is a mountain bike route taking in the Tarns and Windermere shoreline.
To the Lake Shore
- From the cottage head down the lane, towards the Cuckoo Brow Inn.
- at the bottom of the lane, bear right up the track heading up behind the Cuckoo Brow Inn.
- Follow this track through a gate and over the crest of the hill and through another gate.
- Ignore the footpath leading off to the left and proceed straight ahead through another gate.
- Follow this track through the trees and then it descends quite steeply down to the Lake Shore
Lake Shore
- On reaching the Lake turn left and follow the track along the Lake shoreline for approx 2.5Km
- you will reach a Tarmac road at Red Nab, bear right to stay on the Lake Shore.
- continue until you reach a Bay with a footpath on the right signposted to Wray Castle, follow the main path climbing away from the Lake Shore
- On reaching the road at the top of the climb turn Left towards High Wray
High Wray
- Follow the road to High Wray until just after a road joins from the left.
- About 50m after the road joins, turn left, onto a forest road signposted "Base Camp"
- Follow this road, which turns into a track up to Base Camp and just before passing around a locked gate you should see a Bridleway - take the bridleway - you may need to walk for a bit!! (I do)
- Follow the Bridleway until you rejoin the forest road then turn left down the hill.
- Follow the forest road up until you reach a telephone mast on your left. There is another forest road to the right - take this heading away from the mast.
- At the end of the forest road you join a bridleway after climbing a very short steep rise, turn right on the bridleway.
- After about 500m you join a forest road where you should bear left up the hill, this turns back into a bridleway on reaching the top, keep left.
The Tarns
- Follow this bridalway past Wise Een, and Moss Eccles Tarns
- After Moss Eccles Tarn the track turns more into a farm track, and after a while there is a fork, bear left at the fork through a gate.
- Follow this track down through another gate and to a ford in the stream.
- Cross the stream and follow the track up to a road
- Follow this road past the old rectory to join the main road through Far Sawrey
- Turn left passing the Cuckoo Brow inn, and then take the lane back up to the cottage, or stop at the pub for a quick beer.
